« Joint Species Distribution Models (JSDMs): recent advances and new perspectives for improving the inference and prediction of species’ distributions »
Species distribution models (SDMs) are major tools for studying and predicting the geographical distribution of species populations over space and time. Among these tools, joint species distribution models (JSDMs) have emerged as a powerful statistical approach for analyzing community datasets comprising multiple species. Indeed, these multivariate models account for among-species residual covariations that are not explained by the included predictors, via different statistical methods. It is acknowledged that interspecific residuals may arise from different sources, « including omitted covariate(s), model misspecification, or biotic interactions, » although the interpretation of what JSDMs can actually estimate remains a topic of important debate. Nonetheless, many avenues remain for further research into JSDMs’ ability to infer species-environment relationships and predict future distributions. In addition, challenges remain regarding mathematical formulations, statistical implementations, and computational costs of such models. This session will welcome simultaneously methodological contributions (assessments of inferential capacity and/or predictive performance, novel methods and JSDM implementations, new packages) as well as more ecological presentations (in which the use of JSDMs is clearly motivated and interpreted in the broader context of species distribution modeling).
