Topic: How does pre-natal exposure to “forever chemicals” affect cognition in developing birds?
Waterbird populations are declining globally, and environmental contaminants such as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or “forever chemicals”) may contribute to these declines. Little is known about how early-life exposure may influence behavior and cognitive development, especially in avian models. In this project, we experimentally investigated the effects of early exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of PFAS in mallard ducklings (Anas platyrhynchos). One of the aims of the project was to investigate whether exposure during early development influences ecologically relevant behavior and cognitive performance.
Farmed mallard eggs were exposed to PFAS through in ovo (in the egg) injections in summer 2025, simulating the maternal transfer of contaminants from mother to egg. The ducklings were hatched and raised under controlled conditions. For five weeks, the ducklings participated in a series of cognitive and behavioral tests which were video recorded.
The master’s project will focus primarily on the analysis of these video recordings. The student will quantify the ducklings’ cognitive performance by coding videos of a series of tests (barrier detour test, inhibitory control, predator cue response). The student will then investigate whether pre-natal PFAS exposure is associated with differences in cognitive performance and behavioral traits among seven different exposure groups.
This project would suit a student interested in animal behavior, cognition, behavioral ecology or ecotoxicology. It provides an opportunity to work with experimentally collected behavioral data and to gain experience in behavioral video analysis, data analysis and statistical modelling.
