Isabelle Boulangeat (ANSES, Montpellier), Mohamed Hilal (CESAB-INRAE, Dijon) and Cathleen Petit-Cailleux (Kyoto University) will present the work of the SPATMAN group: Human pressures on biodiversity : a spatial and temporal perspective to decompose different anthropogenic activities and their impacts.
ABSTRACT:
Human pressures on biodiversity are influenced not just by the intensity of human activities, but also by their spatial organization. This is the main focus of the SPaTMAN project (FRB-Cesab), which unites conservation ecologists, spatial ecologists, geographers, and economists to investigate how human pressures impact biodiversity by examining the characteristics of the human activities involved.
This webinar presents two subprojects. The first links the presence of sensitive species (birds, mammals, amphibians) to two dimensions of human pressures: (1) how humans have structured the landscape and (2) where people are or move (resident population, work mobility, tourism). This research is carried out on a 10×10 km grid, using machine learning in addition to linear models. Results emphasize a significant role for human mobility.
The second subproject maps, on a global scale, the scientific evidence regarding direct human pressures on terrestrial biodiversity. It assesses among other criteria the frequency of different ecological scales in the studies and the types of human pressures or activities investigated. Using a corpus of nearly 200,000 references, natural language processing tools identify thematic trends and knowledge gaps.
Together, these two approaches demonstrate how SPaTMAN offers a new perspective on human pressures and their impacts on biodiversity.
