We are very pleased to announce our next online CESABINAR, which will take place on Thurs June 25th at 3:00pm CEST. Arnaud Auber (IFREMER, Boulogne-sur-Mer) will present the work of the MAESTRO group: Towards climate-ready fisheries management in the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterraniean Sea.

ABSTRACT:
Oceans provide more than 60% of the world’s monetized ecosystem services and are essential for food security and economic activity through marine resources such as fish and benthic invertebrates. Yet climate change and fishing pressure are altering the distribution, abundance, and composition of marine species worldwide. Although many studies have projected future species distributions, far less attention has been devoted to understanding how these drivers affect the functional diversity of marine communities, a key determinant of ecosystem functioning. This gap limits our ability to anticipate the combined impacts of climate change and fisheries exploitation and to develop adaptive management strategies. The MAESTRO project addresses this challenge by integrating datasets on fish and invertebrate communities from the Northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Its first objective is to quantify the effects of climate change and fishing on the functional diversity of communities over the past three decades. The second objective is to predict how these communities will respond to ocean warming from the contemporary period to the end of the century. Finally, MAESTRO seeks to identify alternative fishing strategies targeting novel combinations of species that minimize impacts on ecosystem functioning while maintaining levels of fishery landings, supporting climate-resilient fisheries management.

The aim of these CESABINARS is to present the main results of the working groups once they finish a CESAB cycle. They last about 1 hour: 40 minutes of presentation + 20 minutes of questions. The CESABINARs are open to the whole scientific community, to the participants of the CESAB groups and to the FRB network. They are in English, so don’t hesitate to promote them in your networks.

In case you miss it, this session (and all the other ones whenever possible) will be recorded and shared on the FRB’s Youtube channel.
