We are opening a four-year PhD position at the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (Spain). The research focus of this position is on modeling large-scale plant diversity changes under strong disequilibrium. The PhD thesis project aims to identify the drivers of current disequilibrium in species distribution especially in human dominated landscapes, and explore ways in which novel ecosystems could enhance stability and biodiversity under climate change. This PhD project, while focused on modeling and disequilibrium, has several leads and so the PhD candidate has the potential to build their own thesis within the subject area. We are looking for an individual with strong background in data science, statistics and modeling of biodiversity with either static or dynamic models.

This project is funded by the Spanish Research Agency and is part of a larger project on plant disequilibrium and ecosystem responses under environmental change. The project and the PhD candidate will be in coordination with labs based in Denmark, France, the Netherlands, USA and China, ensuring a wide network and opportunities of connections abroad.

The candidate will be based at the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (IBB), a fast-growing Institute that encompasses a wide range of disciplines around Plant Sciences. The IBB is part of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and benefits from several computing infrastructure facilities. While we expect the candidate to be present at the center, the candidate will benefit from a flexible schedule and the possibility of remote work when needed.
