Dear Colleagues,

I’m looking for a PhD student to join my group at Karlstad University (Sweden) for an interdisciplinary project combining freshwater ecology, biodiversity modelling, geospatial analyses, and machine learning.

We’ll work with millions of benthic macroinvertebrate records from Swedish monitoring programmes, linked with spatial data on natural and human impacts, to develop models that can predict biodiversity responses to restoration and management actions, identify ecologically valuable habitats, and support real-world decision making.

The PhD student will join two strong research environments in Karlstad: the well-established River Ecology and Management (RivEM) group and our rapidly expanding Evolutionary Biology group. There will be excellent opportunities for collaborations with conservation practitioners, agencies, and water managers.

I’m looking for someone with:
– A background in biology/ecology with strong quantitative skills (R or Python)
– Interest in machine learning and/or GIS
– Experience with freshwater biodiversity is a plus — but curiosity most important

The position is fully funded for four years (salary + benefits under the Swedish system).

Deadline: 26 August 2025
Starting date: According to agreement, as soon as possible
