France Energies Marines institute
France Energies Marines is the French Institute for Energy Transition dedicated to offshore renewable energies. Its mission is to provide, develop and nurture the scientific and technical environment needed to overcome the obstacles facing this sector. With a multidisciplinary team of more than 60 employees and a model of public-private collaboration, the Institute has a raison d’être: R&D, whether collaborative or carried out as part of a service activity.
The work planned under this contract will be as part of the NESTORE research project, aiming to assess the cumulative impacts of offshore wind energy, and the EOLENMER observatory to characterize the socio-economic impacts of offshore wind energy on French coastlines.

Context
At sea, accessibility to ecological habitats and ecosystem services (ES) plays a decisive role in the ES and their exploitation by various users. However the notion of « access to ES » is under-studied, but is particularly important to address in the context of offshore wind farm development. Indeed, these new infrastructures modify ecosystems, maritime regulations, the interplay of stakeholders and the spatialization of sea users. In doing so, they profoundly modify the access to ES, giving rise to potential conflicts and antagonisms between services.
Mapping ES access and anticipating its evolution would contribute to better integration of offshore wind farms and more effective strategic maritime planning.

Job description
Objectives
The aim of this contract is to develop relevant indicators for mapping the access to marine ES, and to study how offshore wind energy modifies ES access, based on concrete case studies. The candidate will contribute to building an operational framework to apply the notion of access to ES in the marine environment, including analyzing its relevance to maritime spatial planning and the study of synergies and trade-offs between services.

Missions
The proposed research approach is highly interdisciplinary and based on a comparative analysis of two territories with offshore wind farm projects in France (Seine bay and Gulf of Lion). Details of the proposed missions are as follows:
1. Conceptualize the notion of access to marine ES, identify its components and its complementarity with the notions of supply, demand and flow of services,
2. Identify ES access indicators and map them for each study area,
3. Envisage the evolution of ES access in the context of offshore wind energy development, using a scenario-based approach involving various local stakeholders, and/or modelling.
4. Write a scientific paper on the application of the concept of ES access in the marine environment.
