One internship position focusing on the thermal performance curves of antioxidant enzymes is
available at the RECOVER (RISKS, ECOSYSTEMS, VULNERABILITY, ENVIRONMENT,
RESILIENCE) laboratory in the freshwater ecology (FRESHCO) team at INRAE of Aix-En-
Provence (France). The student will work under the supervision of Martin DAUFRESNE,
Arnaud SENTIS and Rémy LASSUS.
Topic:
A better knowledge of thermal tolerance of organisms is critical to predict and manage the
ecological consequences of global warming. Especially the maximum critical temperature
(CTmax) is a good proxy of upper thermal tolerance. However, evaluation of CTmax requires
lethal or complex experimental procedures. The successful candidate will evaluate the
performances of antioxydant enzymes (CAT, GPX) at different temperatures and explore the
relationship between thermal performance curves and CTmax of fish (two species). The goal is to
develop a nonintrusive and efficient method for measuring CTmax as well as better
understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying the CTmax of fish.

Candidate competences:
We are seeking highly motivated students with good organizational skills and strong interests in
eco-physiology and experimental and global change ecology. Master students in biology,
ecology, physiology or a related field are welcomed. Students interested in both experimental and
physiological work are particularly encouraged to apply. Previous experience with freshwater
fauna (fish), laboratory experiments, use of spreadsheets (e.g. Excel) and statistical analyses (R
software) will be appreciated.
