Title: Genetics and physiology of water stress in white spruce
Description: Assisted migration has been proposed as a proactive measure to maintain productivity and reduce the vulnerability of forest ecosystems to climate change. Seed transfer models have been developed to guide the choice of sources best adapted to the future climate and must incorporate the risks associated with drought events.
This project aims to examine under controlled conditions the role of local genetic adaptation and phenotypic plasticity of xylem hydraulic properties and leaf physiology in response to water stress and identify the potential genes involved.
The student will join a multidisciplinary team (genetics, ecophysiology, climate change, seedling production and forest nurseries, and forest ecology and management) and multi-institutional (University of Quebec at Abitibi-Temiscamingue (UQAT), Laval University, and Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP)).
Required profile: We are looking for an ambitious and highly motivated PhD student with a completed MSc degree in plant physiology, forestry, biology or a related discipline is required. The student must have basic training in the use of bioinformatics tools in data analysis.
Location: The student will be based at the Forest research institute (IRF) at the Rouyn-Noranda campus of the UQAT. Part of the work will be carried out in the High-performance greenhouse complex at Laval University.
The IRF offers a dynamic research environment, with 10 professors and 60 graduate students working on various topics having a direct impact on sustainable forest management. IRF students also benefit from the resources and professional development opportunities offered by the Centre d’étude de la forêt (CEF).
Start date: September 2021
Funding: CAD $21,000/year for three years
