The University of Montpellier (UM) is recruiting a lead program management Officer of the technical support unit for the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services).
UM has entered into an agreement with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Secretariat to host the technical support unit for the IPBES (“transformative change assessment” for the period from March 2022 to 2025. The purpose of this unit is to support the production of the IPBES assessment of the underlying causes of biodiversity loss and the determinants of transformative change and options for achieving the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity. The technical support unit will work in close collaboration with the IPBES Secretariat, under the direction of the Executive Secretary, to ensure proper implementation of the assessment., UM seeks to recruit 3 persons full-time under fixed-term contracts:
– a lead program management officer
– an associate program management officer
– a program management assistant

The Lead Program Management Officer ( will be responsible for planning, coordinating and monitoring the TSU activities and budget; for tracking progress of the assessment; and for informing the IPBES Executive Secretary, Plenary, Bureau and Multidisciplinary Expert Panel about progress made, difficulties met and mitigation measures implemented.
S/He will put in place appropriate working tools and procedures within the team and with the host and partner organisations, and lead the 6-monthly reporting process.
S/He will be the one to ensure close collaboration with the other task forces (on capacity building, knowledge and data, indigenous and local knowledge, policy tools and methodologies and scenarios and models concerning the implementation of relevant approaches and guidance in the assessment). Where relevant, s/he will also support the IPBES Secretariat to ensure coordination with other IPBES deliverables, notably the thematic assessment of the interlinkages among biodiversity, water, food and health in the context of climate change (“nexus assessment”).
The Lead Programme Management Officer will work under the responsibility of his line manager at UM and in close collaboration with the team of Agropolis International, the organisation that will physically host the technical support unit and manage the budget for the organisation of meetings. host the technical support unit and manage the budget for the organisation of meetings.

Required qualifications and skills
– diploma requirement : PhD or engineering degree in a relevant field (ecology, international project management or policy sciences…) and at least 5 years of relevant professional experience
– Bilingual French/English
– Excellent writing skills in English
– At ease with ITCs
– Very well organised, rigorous, autonomous
– Ability to manage a small team

– Salary based on UM grid, IGR level with a monthly gross salary from 1950 € to 2670 € depending on experience and expertise
– The position is based in Montpellier, within the premises of Agropolis International
